Sensei Jason
Sensei Jason began training in traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate in 1985 at the Henley Karate Club under Sensei Rick Mortlock. He earned his first belt, ninth kyu, on 15 December 1985.Â
Through steady effort he progressed through two to three grades per year and achieved his first degree black belt on 9 December 1990 at the age of thirteen. The grading was a demanding five hour test that received recognition in the local newspaper in early 1991.Â
During this period he was also active in competition. In 1990 he became Western Region Kata and Kumite Champion and placed third at the national championships. In 1991, at fourteen years old, he achieved the title of National Champion. He continued to advance his skills by attending twelve specialist courses between 1988 and 1991 to refine technique and deepen understanding.Â
After earning his first degree black belt, Sensei Jason continued to progress through the senior grades. He achieved Sandan in December 2008, Yondan in September 2011, Godan in 2016, and Rokudan on 28 September 2024. Rokudan places him among the most experienced practitioners within the style, with Nanadan as the next advanced grade.
He remains an active member of the English Goju Ryu Karate-Do Association, the European Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-Do Federation, and the International Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-Do Federation.
Alongside his extensive karate background, Sensei Jason has also trained in Muay Thai and Chinese Kickboxing for many years. His experience across these disciplines contributes to the depth of his experience and technique.Â
