Traditional Okinawan
Karate
A Martial Art Rooted in History, Culture, and Discipline.
Okinawan Goju Ryu is one of the oldest and most respected forms of karate in the world. It began in Okinawa, where ancient martial traditions were shaped through centuries of cultural exchange between China and Japan.Â
These influences created a style that emphasises balance, discipline, and harmony between strength and softness.Â
At NSK Martial Arts, we honour this heritage by teaching Goju Ryu in its traditional form. Our training preserves the techniques, values, and teachings that have been passed down through generations of dedicated practitioners.Â
The name Goju Ryu translates to âhard and soft styleâ. Go represents firm, powerful techniques. Ju represents fluid, adaptive movement. Together, they create a martial system that develops strength, control, and resilience.Â
This balance is expressed in the Kenkon symbol, which represents heaven and earth. Heaven is round and soft. Earth is square and firm. The symbol reflects the harmony between these forces, and it is central to understanding Goju Ryu.Â
Traditional training in Goju Ryu develops much more than physical skill. It builds character, patience, and self-control. Students learn to stay calm under pressure, to approach challenges with discipline, and to grow through steady practice.
These qualities have shaped the art for generations, and they continue to guide the training at NSK Martial Arts Centre.
Goju Ryu was established by Miyagi Chojun Sensei, who dedicated his life to refining and teaching this art. His family crest, found in the centre of the Goju badge, represents the origins of the tradition.Â
NSK Martial Arts Centre is proud to practice the standards of the International Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-Do Federation (IOGKF) and the English Goju Ryu Karate-Do Association (EGKA), which continue to preserve the teachings of Miyagi Sensei with authenticity and respect.Â
These include:
â Respect others
â Be couragous
â Train mind and body
â Practise daily and protect traditional Karate
â Strive to teach the essence of Goju Ryu
â Never give up
These principles shape behaviour on and off the mats. They are central to the practice of traditional Okinawan karate at NSK Martial Arts.Â
